Horary Astrology - Question Charts
"The whole universe is one single living being, encompassing and containing all living beings within it; what happens in one part of it is felt in all its other parts."
"There is one common breath of life pulsing through all. This is not a random collection of parts, but an inner harmony where everything acts together and breathes together, so that one thing influences another."
Plotinus
The Influence of the Void of Course Moon
The Moon is a primary player in horary charts. As the fastest celestial body, it acts as a co-significator for the querent. It is the most active factor in forming connections with other chart components, making its movements of paramount importance.
Generally, the Moon is said to be Void of Course when it makes no applying aspect to any other planet, though the exact definition is subject to varying interpretations across traditions. This concept is crucial in both horary astrology and electional astrology, as there is no support for initiating action. Nothing will come of the matter; new beginnings are unlikely to bear fruit, as if the world is taking a pause.
Guido Bonatti notes that a Void of Course Moon signifies delay, prevention, and obstacles; matters will not reach a good outcome, and the affair will be canceled or left unfulfilled according to expectations. The querent will return empty-handed, and even disgraced or humiliated.
Despite the significance of the Void of Course Moon, its true meaning can only be fully understood after a comprehensive analysis of the entire chart.
There are at least four main definitions of the "Void of Course Moon" used by astrologers across different traditions, all of which represent symbolically significant states and varying degrees of disconnection from other planets:
Void of Course Moon in Hellenistic Astrology
The concept of the "Void of Course Moon" first appeared in the Hellenistic tradition around the 1st century CE. The original Greek term was kenodromia, meaning "running in the void" or "running in emptiness."
This condition was applied exclusively to the Moon and was originally defined as occurring when the Moon makes no applying major Ptolemaic aspect to any other planet within the next 30 degrees of its course, regardless of sign boundaries. The major aspects are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition. If a benefic planet is simultaneously located on one of the angles, the pessimistic prediction is completely negated. This is an extremely rare phenomenon, occurring only once or twice a year. The energy is that of an isolated Moon—perhaps even emotionally lonely—with no companion to support or assist it. In the Hellenistic era, this condition was primarily considered within natal astrology.
Void of Course Moon in the Perso-Arabic Period
During the Arabic period, beginning in the 8th century, horary astrology flourished and became exceptionally popular. The Moon, as noted, served as a crucial factor in understanding expected outcomes. Sahl ibn Bishr, a 9th-century astrologer, stated that a Void of Course Moon forms no aspectual connection by degree with any of the planets and does not join in conjunction with any of them. Sahl referred to degree connections within an orb of 12°, representing the Moon's daily movement—its average daily motion being 12–13 degrees. If, over the course of a day, the Moon is not within range to complete an aspect or connection with another planet, its path remains empty and devoid of planetary relationships. Sahl gave no weight to sign boundaries regarding "running in the void," making this, too, a relatively rare occurrence.
Void of Course Moon According to William LillyThe Moon is void of course when it is not applying to an aspect within an active orb of operation, regardless of sign boundaries. If the Moon is in the final degrees of a sign and forms no further aspect within that sign, but enters the orb of another planet as soon as it crosses into the next sign, it is not considered void. This approach resembles the Hellenistic definition in that it ignores sign boundaries, but it occurs much more frequently, as Lilly's defined orb for the Moon was typically less than 10°.
Void of Course Moon in Modern Astrology
In modern times, the popular colloquial term "Black Moon" has sometimes been applied to it, and the definition has shifted: the Moon is considered void of course when it makes no further exact aspect to any other planet before leaving its current sign. Under this approach, the Moon is void from the moment it completes its final aspect in its current sign until it enters the next sign. The modern standard definition describes a frequent event occurring every few days. To some extent, the concept seems to have been blown out of proportion, receiving a strict interpretation similar to what was originally reserved for a far rarer phenomenon.
